KB Sunday School Information

The Sunday School at Kahal B’raira provides children with an engaging, stimulating and welcoming experience to acquaint them with the history, traditions, beliefs and accomplishments of the Jewish people. Students are taught to understand, celebrate and identify with this heritage, with a focus on the humanistic elements as most relevant to our congregation and to the modern world. The school environment emphasizes experiential learning, and is designed to promote critical thinking and collaboration in the pursuit of a holistic Humanistic Jewish identity for each student.

The Sunday School is scheduled at the same time as the whole-congregation meetings to encourage connection to the KB community. Appropriately-sized classes spanning nursery school through seventh grade are lead by paid teachers, assisted by one or more aides drawn from KB’s enthusiastic young adult population. Curriculum includes holidays, Bible stories, history, Jewish culture and traditions, literature, current events and Humanistic ethics. We encourage parental involvement with the school and take seriously our commitment to tailor each student’s educational experience to their needs and abilities.

Please contact our Sunday School Principal, Sandra Mayo, with any questions about the program.  Her email address is sandramayo@rcn.com.

Vistors

Your children are welcome to visit the Sunday school, but please contact the principal beforehand so that she can make the necessary arrangements.

Curriculum

Our Sunday School is organized by a committee of parents whose activities include enrollment, hiring of the principal and teachers, and curriculum development. The School consists of small classes, spanning nursery through seventh grade. Curriculum includes holidays, Bible stories, history, Jewish culture and traditions, literature, current events and ethics. To see our K-7 curriculum summary, click here. The classes meet 14 times, approximately every three to four weeks between September and June on Sunday mornings at the Fayerweather School, 765 Concord Ave, Cambridge.

Bar and Bat Mitzvahs

Bar and Bat Mitzvah preparation is an optional program.  Families are encouraged to include the congregation. The child selects and studies a Judaic topic for one year with an adult tutor, and then makes a presentation to the congregation as part of the Bar or Bat Mitzvah service. Each Mitzvah family creates and organizes its own service with support from the congregation.  The program is described in more detail here.

Enrollment in the Sunday School

The Kahal B’raira Sunday School runs for 14 sessions, September through June.  Annual tuition for each child enrolled is as follows:

  • Preschool  $300 (child should be > 3 years of age AND toilet trained)
  • Kindergarten-Grade 8 $475
There is also a youth group for children beyond grade 8.  Tuition is $325.  Technically speaking, the youth group is not part of the Sunday school, because it meets on its own schedule.

You can enroll your children in the Sunday school when you join KB.  Use the enrollment form.
Grade Placement

The Sunday School Committee reserves the right to determine the placement and age ranges for each class according to enrollment.  Sunday School level does not need to be the same as the child’s regular school level.  If there is any information that will allow the Sunday School to place your child appropriately and/or that will assist the teacher, please let us know by attaching an explanation to the enrollment form.

Survey Results

During the Spring of 2008, we distributed two surveys -- one to parents, and one to teachers.  Here are the summaries:

the parent survey, and the teacher survey.
